About Web Accessibility Group (WAG) Spotlight

The Web Accessibility Group (WAG) began at UGA in 2011 and transitioned to Georgia Tech's AMAC Accessibility in 2015. Its purpose is to bring together individuals in higher education attempting to navigate the complex requirements of Section 508 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. WAG currently offers web accessibility information and assistance through a wiki, listserv, and monthly online meetings where expert presenters are invited to share best practices and solutions.

 
Dr. Beatriz Potter

Dr. Beatriz Potter, a faculty member in the Modern and Classical (MCL) Languages Department at Valdosta State University (VSU) has been a leader in addressing accessibility issues in online courses and instructional materials.

WAG Monthly Meetings

The Web Accessibility Group (WAG) meets online via Collaborate web conferencing system on the first Wednesday of the month.

Recent Meeting: Wednesday May 2, 2018 from 11:00am-12:00pm (EDT)

Topic: Basics of Accessible MS Office Documents (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Description: This webinar will cover beginning steps for creating accessible MS Office documents. This session will cover basic steps for creating accessible documents, presentations and spreadsheets. Common questions will be answered, including:

  • Word: How do you modify the default Styles to ensure they are accessible?
  • Word: How do you use the Navigation Pane to check for proper structure and hierarchy?
  • PowerPoint: Which slide designs and layouts are accessible? Which are not?
  • PowerPoint: How do you use Pattern Fill to avoid color-coding for charts and graphs?
  • Excel: What information should always be placed in cell A1 of your spreadsheets?
  • Excel: How do you Format Plot Area to ensure line graphs are accessible?

These questions (and more) will be answered during this training. Screen shots and step-by-step instructions will be provided to help ensure your Word, PowerPoint and Excel files are accessible for all.

Presenter: Janet Sylvia, Coordinator Web Accessibility Group (WAG) and Accessibility Specialist with AMAC Accessibility Solutions.
Presenter Bio: Janet Sylvia has provided accessibility consultation and training for over 15 years. Her areas of expertise include Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 implementation for institutes of higher education. In 2011 she co-founded the Web Accessibility Group (WAG), which transitioned to AMAC in 2015. She is the current WAG Coordinator and Accessibility Specialist at AMAC Accessibility Solutions, which is located at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
