|Alternative Media is any material (such as textbooks, electronic documents, or exams) that an individual requires to be converted into an accessible format.  Typical examples include electronic text, Braille, or captioning. Currently, AMAC offers an extensive list of alternative solutions including Adobe PDFs, Microsoft Word Documents, HTML, Daisy Talking Books, MathML, braille and tactile graphics, Remote Real-Time Captioning (Text Interpreting) and CART, and Captioned Media.

Text Interpreting is a meaning based or summarized account of the spoken message. It includes significant information delivered by the speaker, without all of the extraneous nuances of spoken language, which may sometimes be difficult to understand by those with hearing loss or language-based disabilities. Notes of the session are sent to the student/recipient as an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Text_Format RTF] document within 24 hours of the event.

Accessible Products & Services
Alternative Text Formats icon AMAC provides technology-based products, technical assistance, and training to public and private entities that require assistance with supporting customers and employees with disabilities. AMAC offers an extensive list of accessible product and service solutions.

Choosing a Product or Service

AMAC advocates accessibility for all through the principles of Universal Design for Learning.

Access to the information in instructional materials can be limiting, when the material is only presented in a standard printed format. Many of the skills and senses needed to process printed material can exclude persons with print related disabilities from accessing the information they contain.

There are several factors to consider when choosing an alternative media format.

  • Type of Disability
For example, someone who is blind or visually impaired could require braille or electronic text with images/pictures described (alt text), while someone with cognitive reading disabilities might need electronic text without images/pictures described.*Type of Material
The document’s subject material (either instructional or informational) can make an important difference. Correspondingly, if the text contains graphs or pictures, the lack of alt text makes text to speech software inadequate.*Type of Assistive Technology (AT)
Specific AT is designed for user’s disability access needs and formats, such as text to speech tools or screen magnifiers.*Type of Learner
An individual’s learning style (e.g. visual, auditory, or tactile) plays an important part in choosing a file format. For example, maintaining images within the text may be more important to visual learners, while auditory learners benefit more from hearing the text read aloud.

Assistive Technology Assessment: AMAC TechMatch

Let AMAC help you discover the technology you need to succeed. When it comes to education, information is often presented in challenging ways. Fortunately, there are countless amazing technology products designed to help students access information. TechMatch will help you identify the right technology solution for you. Captioning Services include: Remote Real-Time Captioning (Text Interpreting); Remote Real-time CART; and Asynchronous Text Interpreting for online learning courses. All captioning services include notes of the session sent to the student/recipient.

Audio Products include: Captioned Media; Transcripts; and Professional Minute Writing. Media with audio or audio only recordings are converted to open/closed captions or text for access and archival purposes.

Captioning Service Description Recommended User Examples
Remote Real-Time Captioning (Text Interpreting) Can be provided in any environment that has an internet connection. Our captionists will listen to your live event or class remotely and provide access for your client(s) or student(s) by real-time text interpreting of the spoken information.

Text Interpreting is a meaning based or summarized account of the spoken message. It includes significant information delivered by the speaker, without all of the extraneous nuances of spoken language, which may sometimes be difficult to understand by those with hearing loss or language-based disabilities. Notes of the session are sent to the student/recipient as an RTF document within 24 hours of the event.

Students, clients, trainees, or employees who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, have language-based learning disabilities, or ESL individuals
Remote Real-Time CART Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is provided remotely when access to every single word is necessary. CART is a verbatim account of everything that is spoken. CART is most effective for providing access to late-deafened adults who are accustomed to hearing all the elements of spoken language or ESL individuals. Transcripts of the session are sent to the student/recipient as an RTF document within 24 hours of the event. Students, clients, trainees, or employees who are late-deafened and accustomed to hearing all the elements of spoken language, or ESL individuals
Asynchronous Text Interpreting (Online learning) Created at AMAC as a solution to accommodate students in online learning courses. A benefit of asynchronous online learning (not at the same time as the teacher presents) is the flexibility of viewing anytime the student chooses – students who need access to the audio components of online courses should have this same benefit. The audio components of any course can be text interpreted and the transcript viewed anytime the student chooses, asynchronously. Students, clients, or trainees who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, or ESL individuals desiring to learn online
