Alternative Media Formats
Accessible formats include braille, electronic text, Learning Ally Audiobooks, captioned media, described media, and MathML. Please see AMAC's Production Policies for additional information.

AMAC Repository
AMAC maintains a central digital repository of alternative media textbooks that currently includes almost 30,000 titles in a variety of formats. Re-use orders on alternative media formats that AMAC has already produced receive a 30% discount.

Note: The prices per page listed below may not include some expenses such as the cost of purchasing a hard copy of the book or an administrative processing fee of $28.00. The minimum price for an alternative media order is $40.

When the publisher file is unavailable, we buy, chop, and scan the book and use Optical Character Recognition software to make it accessible. The final file has proper tags, optimized reading order, pagination, bookmarks, and metadata. Same layout as the print textbook.

Bookmarks and correct page numbers for easy navigation. Text can be read aloud by screen readers with synchronized highlighting of text. Students can easily magnify the text or change color contrast options. The OCR process takes longer than the options above, but the reading order is optimized for a better screen reading experience.

PDF: Scanned Image $0.08 When we encounter graphic novels with handwritten fonts and PDFs with many phonetic symbols or accent marks that are difficult for OCR software to translate into text, we scan the book, correct the page numbers, add metadata, and create bookmarks for easy navigation. PDF: Enhanced Tagged Quoted Project

We obtain a PDF file from the publisher and then enhance it by tagging all heading levels, paragraphs, lists, and tables to improve the reading order. These files retain the same visual layout as the print textbook and include bookmarks for navigation. AMAC will automatically send out a quote for all Enhanced Tagged PDF orders. Same layout as the print textbook.

We also include brief alt text on images. MS Word Doc files are formatted in a single column layout and are best for students who use screen reading software such as JAWS or NVDA. MS Word Doc: Long Description Quoted Project

The reading order is optimized for a better screen reading experience. Comprehensive alt text descriptions are provided for images and they are clearly indicated within the document with “Image starts” and “Image ends.”

We use Optical Character Recognition software to create and export an accessible file that we then convert to DAISY format so it can be accessed with Dolphin EasyReader software. The final file has optimized reading order, three levels of headings, pagination, and metadata. We also include brief alt text on images. DAISY files are read by Dolphin EasyReader, which has a wide range of voices to choose from.

Three levels of headings and page numbers are included for quick navigation. The reading order is optimized for a better screen reading experience. Alt text descriptions are provided for images.

EPUB Standard: $0.45

We use Optical Character Recognition software to create and export an accessible file that we then convert to EPUB format so it can be accessed with various readers, such as iBooks for OS/iOS, Microsoft Edge, Readium, and Dolphin EasyReader 7. The final file has optimized reading order, three levels of headings, pagination, and metadata. We also include brief alt text on images. EPUBs feature reflowable content, resizable images and tables, and adjustable font sizes and colors, offering a highly customizable experience for students.

EPUBs can be read with multiple readers and software packages, and many new devices come with an EPUB reader built in. The reading order is optimized for a better screen reading experience. We offer EPUBs with or without alt text descriptions for images, depending on preference.

HTML Simple: $0.37

Complex: $0.73

We use Optical Character Recognition software to create and export an accessible file that we then convert to HTML format so it can be accessed with a browser. The final file has optimized reading order, three levels of headings, pagination, and metadata. We also include brief alt text on images. HTML files are read by web browsers, which are free and easy for users to customize.

Three levels of headings and page numbers are included for quick navigation. The reading order is optimized for a better screen reading experience. Alt text descriptions are provided for images.

Learning Ally Audiobook $40.00 per book for USG and Deluxe Members We partner with Learning Ally and will search their library to see if the book is available. If it is, we create an account for your student with Learning Ally and provide instructions for logging in and accessing their digital bookshelf. Books are downloaded and read with Learning Ally software.

These files are audio only, and are read aloud with human narration, not synthetic speech. Students can navigate through the audio file by headings or page numbers.

PowerPoint Quoted Project

Provide us with a PowerPoint presentation, and we will make it fully accessible so that it clears the accessibility check. We determine the reading order of objects on slides to improve the screen reading experience. Tables are made accessible with structural alt text, and all images are given comprehensive alt text. AMAC will automatically send out a quote for all PowerPoint orders. Slides are given unique titles for clear navigation.

All content, objects, and spacing are adjusted for a better experience with screen reading software. Comprehensive alt text descriptions are provided for images. All tables are made fully accessible and include structural alt text to describe the column headers.
